Skincare Prep Tips For Brides

Meghan Lawlor

If you are a bride in the thick of your planning, you can do it! So much preparation goes into this day. The dress, bridesmaids, décor, flowers, venue… My head is spinning just thinking about it and I’m not even getting married! Most brides that I talk to are feeling the pressure but of course, none of them want to look as tired or stressed as they feel on the big day. The best way to look fresh and awake is to take amazing care of your skin, both on the outside and the inside.

Here are my tips for bridal skin prep, make sure you start them 2-3 months before the wedding since skincare is like exercise, consistency is key and it takes a little while to see results. Once you see them you will be so glad you made these changes.

1.    Wash your makeup off (well) every night. This means get out the eye makeup remover and the q-tips because you need to remove every milligram of Mascara, eyeliner, and everything else you apply to your skin during the day. Leaving your makeup on overnight ages the skin, it’s actually the second leading cause of aging after the sun. This is something you should be doing every night anyway but make sure you are definitely doing it in the months leading up to your wedding.

2.    Use an eye cream. Guys anyone over the age of 18 should be using an eye cream for prevention of premature signs aging. If you’re over that age and want to do what you can to reverse the signs of aging an eye cream is the best way to do that (other than Botox of course which I am not opposed to but also don’t recommend since it’s completely a personal choice). I like the Clinique Repairwear Laser Focus Wrinkle Correcting Cream. It’s a mouthful and has a price to match but it works better than any I’ve tried so if you can afford it give it a try. If you need something a bit more affordable try the Clinique Pep Start Eye Cream. This one is great for anyone with puffy tired eyes, I love to use it on my brides (and on myself!).

3.    Use a hydrating sheet mask at least once a week starting the month before, but make sure to test it a few months prior. If you have a favourite sheet mask then by all means use that one, but I like the Dr Jart Water Replenishment Mask. It’s hydrating and it honestly reduces the look of my fine lines, which are getting less fine everyday ;).

4.    Drink 2-3L of water every day. This will help to cleanse you from the inside out. It will also help your skin stay hydrated which reduces the appearance of fine lines and keeps your skin vibrant and plump. If you already do this, keep it up you are a superstar!

5.    Avoid refined sugar and alcohol…. I know insert depressing tune here. Alcohol in moderation will not affect your skin in the short term but if you go past the limit most nights your skin will be blotchy and dehydrated. The blotchy patches can be covered, but dehydration cannot be fixed with makeup. Sugar can lead to more breakouts and generally unbalanced skin.

6.    Avoid new skin treatments such as facials or peels the month before your wedding. If you are g to get a facial or something similar then make sure to try it at least 6 months ahead of time to ensure you do not get a reaction. I once had a bride leave a 5 Minute Mask on overnight… THE NIGHT BEFORE THE WEDDING….as a result her skin was dry, flaky, red, and sore. We were able to cover it, but it wasn’t easy. Do yourself a favour and don’t do anything crazy to your skin unless you know exactly how it’s going to react.

Remember: your makeup will only ever look as good as your skin does underneath!

I hope these tips are helpful to those of you who are prepping for your wedding, I wish you the best of luck in all of your planning! Please comment with any questions or comments!
